Key fob not working? Find out why in five minutes

Most dead fobs are a battery. When it isn't, these checks tell you whether you need programming, a new fob, or a look at the car.

Short answer
  • Start with a new battery of the right type, inserted correctly.
  • If the spare fob works, the problem is the first fob.
  • If no fob works, look at the car: battery, fuse or receiver.
  • Buttons dead but the car starts: remote pairing or damaged board.
  • We don't repair fobs; we program or replace them.

Signs of a weak battery

  • Range gets shorter
  • Works only up close
  • Push to start says key not detected
  • Works sometimes

If a new battery didn't help

Try your spare. If the spare works, the first fob lost pairing or is damaged. If neither works, the car may be the issue: a low car battery, a blown fuse or the receiver.

Water and drops

A fob that went through the wash or took a hard drop often has a damaged board. A new key is the fix.

When to call us

When the battery isn't it. We test at the car and tell you what's wrong before replacing anything. See key fob programming.

FAQ

Questions on this topic

Why does my key fob work only sometimes?

Usually a weak battery or a worn contact. If a new battery doesn't fix it, the fob may be failing.

Do I need to reprogram after changing the battery?

Most fobs don't. A few older ones need a re-sync.
