Get a spare car key before you need it

With two keys, losing one is an errand. With one, losing it is an emergency. Here's the math.

Short answer
  • A spare made from a working key is the simplest key job there is.
  • Losing your only key turns into all keys lost, which takes more work and costs more.
  • Used cars often come with one key. Get the second one soon.
  • A second key on the same visit costs less than a separate trip.

One key vs two

With a working key, we add a new key to the car. With none, we start from the lock and the car's modules. That's more time, more risk of needing a tow elsewhere, and a higher price.

Bought a used car with one key?

Very common. Get a spare soon, and ask for any old keys you don't have to be removed from the car.

Where to keep it

At home, not in the car. A spare in the glove box helps a thief more than you.
