Car won't start after a module swap? It's the immobilizer.

Used modules carry the identity of the car they came from. Your keys don't match, so the immobilizer blocks the start. The fix is syncing the data.

Short answer
  • The car cranks but won't start, or starts and dies: classic immobilizer block.
  • Used ECUs, clusters and ignition modules carry another car's data.
  • The fix is transferring or syncing immobilizer data, not more parts.
  • We back up data first and use the safe method.

Why it happens

The engine computer, the key module and sometimes the cluster share a secret. Swap one with a used part and the secret no longer matches.

Which modules matter

  • Engine computer (ECU, ECM, DME)
  • Instrument cluster (many VW, Audi, older GM)
  • Ignition or key module (BMW CAS, Mercedes EIS)
  • Body module (newer cars)

How it's fixed

We read the data from the original part or the car, then write it to the replacement, or add your keys to the new module. Some jobs are on site, some need bench work.

Before you buy a used module

Ask whether it can be matched to your car. Some modules are one-time-programmable. Text us the part and car first.

Can a used ECU be programmed to my car?

Often, yes. Some can't. Ask before buying.

Is this a locksmith job or a mechanic job?

The syncing is a key and immobilizer job, which is what we do.
